Vintage Rods and Tackle From time to time we will offer vintage and used fly fishing tackle. Please check back often for new additions. We are always interested in purchasing or taking consignments of used cane rods, but visitors please take note: Because the value of any fishing collectible is largely based on condition, and because researching values is so time consuming, we can not offer free, sight-unseen tackle appraisals. If you’d like us to appraise your tackle for a fee, please contact us for more information and we’d be happy to assist you. If you’ve arrived here via a search engine because you’ve found an old piece of tackle and hope to learn its value, we are very sorry but we are unable to help you without seeing the tackle and charging a fee.

Colin, Just received my ‘crushed’ fly rod which you have repaired – a wonderful piece of craftsmanship – thank you very much indeed, D.
I tried to make it fun as there are already many throwing stick videos on youtube, but the point it makes is straightforward enough. This is a unique stick in that it is pure carbon, 2 x 2 twill, which makes it incredibly light. We kept it short so you do not have to stretch to reload with bait, which makes it quick and easy to use. Straight sticks spin the bait less than curved sticks so you get less exploding of soft baits and less lift.
Ultimate distance is not as great as curved stick but accuracy is excellent. This is the perfect stick for baiting precisely up to yds, and the light weight makes it all less effort.

Martin Joergensen Highlander split cane, Hardy Perfect He uses this rod for his home rivers, the Danish Karup and Skjern, hunting for salmon and sea trout. When going to Norway’s larger rivers he “cheats” and uses a 14′ Hexagraph rod, which is a carbon fiber rod, but has the action and look of split cane. With these combos he raids the Danish and Norwegian salmon rivers and as you can well imagine, attracts quite some attention when he reveals his gear and opens his flyboxes full of classical full dressed flies.
February Polly Rosborough’s Casual Dress Nymph. E. H. ‘Polly’ Rosborough was part of that generation of fly tiers and anglers that brought rise to the “golden age” of American fly fishing.
Doak Miramichi Hand Tied Tapered Leaders We began making these for our own use a few years ago after being disappointed with the various manufactured leaders of the day. When customers asked what leader we used, the next question would often be why don’t you have them for sale, so we had to start offering them. Along the way, we developed a unique method of tapering and trimming the blood-knots to make them less obtrusive, which is a frequent complaint with knotted leaders.
No chemicals, heat, lubricants or saliva are used in welding the knots, but we think you’ll be pleased with the results, no matter how we do it. Every leader is tied by Jerry Doak and every section is carefully measured and inspected to ensure the highest quality and consistency. For darker rivers like the Miramichi, we use Maxima Chameleon which many salmon fishermen prefer for its abrasion resistance, excellent knot strength and just the right amount of stiffness to ensure a powerful turn over and great fly presentation.
For rivers with clear water, we also offer a more translucent option made with Maxima Ultragreen material. Whichever option you choose, we’re confident you’ll see why these have become our best selling leaders by a Miramichi mile.

Punching Forge welding These operations generally require at least a hammer and anvil , but smiths also use other tools and techniques to accommodate odd-sized or repetitive jobs. Drawing Traditional blacksmith next to his forge of stone and brick Drawing lengthens the metal by reducing one or both of the other two dimensions. As the depth is reduced, or the width narrowed, the piece is lengthened or “drawn out. Drawing does not have to be uniform.
A taper can result as in making a wedge or a woodworking chisel blade. If tapered in two dimensions, a point results. Drawing can be accomplished with a variety of tools and methods. Two typical methods using only hammer and anvil would be hammering on the anvil horn, and hammering on the anvil face using the cross peen of a hammer. Another method for drawing is to use a tool called a fuller , or the peen of the hammer, to hasten the drawing out of a thick piece of metal. The technique is called fullering from the tool.
Fullering consists of hammering a series of indentations with corresponding ridges, perpendicular to the long section of the piece being drawn. The resulting effect looks somewhat like waves along the top of the piece.

Partly cloudy with warmth from the sun made for a great day to be out on the UDR. It was a mixed bag for our boat today with a nice 18 inch ‘bow, three browns up to 15 inches and a few smallmouth bass. This fish was one of three wild trout that Robert caught this afternoon! Welcome back to the Big D – Rich Toohey! Here’s Rich with a chunky 15 inch river smallmouth bass caught late in the trip north of Hollister’s. Bluebird skies, gin clear water, sunny and dry – and nobody else out on the river.
Plenty of bass with a double limit and a huge bass on a Senko midway through our river adventure was icing on the cake! Bill Conley nailed this hawg a wee bit south of Masthope Rapids on this afternoon’s float trip. Bill’s buddy, Joe Paucillo, is on the left. Here’s another shot of that great looking smallmouth bass with Bill and yours truly.
Let’s revive and put that big guy back so that we’ll have a better bass fishery in the future! This time with another nice legal bass under bluebird skies on the UDR! The air temperature went over 75 degrees, the water is crystal clear, sunny and the levels are a bit below normal.
I’m blown away by the level of support from fellow rail enthusiasts in building this site. Their willingness to participate in its construction with no prospect of financial gain, just the satisfaction of being involved, is bloody marvellous. Starting in May , Derek’s input has been a massive undertaking and there have been times when the pair of us – just two bungling old geezers with a mutual love for trains and railways – were on our arthritic knees by the sheer size of it all.
And now here we are with three finished pages…or are they?

Could not subscribe, try again laterInvalid Email The Daily Mirror braved the seas today in a daring bid to hunt down the great white shark rumoured to be lurking off the south coast. After news there could be one of the nightmarish beasts patrolling the Solent , just metres from popular tourist beaches, we hired a boat and set sail. Our man loaded his kit on board the sturdy Valkyrie, a deep sea fishing vessel moored on Hayling Island, Hampshire.
Adam fights with the monster of the deep Image: But as we left the estuary alongside the island we were reminded not to take the seeming comfort of the nearby land for granted. For it was here, at spots such as Mill Rithe and further south at Mengham Rithe, that eyewitnesses told shark expert Mr Pullen they spotted a fish which they were convinced could be nothing other than the feared great white.
The shark emerges from the choppy water Image: Out at sea the weather was muggy and the sea choppy but it was soon time to drop anchor and get fishing. The first catch is a 3ft smooth-hound shark Image: The reel buzzed as a yet unknown prey took the bait and tried to flee out to sea. Grabbing the rod while thrusting it into his hip for stability our man set in for a battle of wills as the powerful prey fought for its life.
Back and forth they went as the reel seemingly screamed with the strain but slowly and surely the prey tired and rose from the murky depths. In an instant it was on board and in an instant it was clear just how abundant the sea life is off the British coast.
